Exploring the notion that the most “difficult” clients on your caseload are likely complex developmental trauma survivors. If you were to shift your perspective, how does that change how you offer mental health care?
Understanding how developmental neglect and abuse affect people in adolescence and adulthood allows therapists to start with the fundamental notion of safety. Emphasize the therapeutic alliance, cultivate a safe space for the person to entertain the possibility that safe, respectful adults exist in the world, and a safe, respectful relationship is possible.
Robin will be will discussing Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), a psychiatric diagnosis in the DSM since version III, but still considered controversial and shrouded by many myths. We will consider what we’ve been taught about DID in our clinical training and media representation. And then we will meet some people with DID who discuss their experiences and their recovery.
Many different resources will be included for additional exploration, interactive exercises, and plenty of time for Q&A.
