This training will include an introduction to the evidence-based practice of CBT. Participants will learn about the history of the theory of cognitive and behavioral psychologies and will work through an example to better understand the links between thoughts, emotions, and feelings. Participants will learn the history of Beck’s 1960s development of CBT and be given a short review of the literature supporting CBT as an evidence-based practice. This training will provide concrete examples of ways that CBT is used to treat kids, SUDs, and psychosis. Additionally, CBT is often practiced through the use of worksheets, so a large portion of the training will allow participants to work in small groups to complete worksheets and evaluate the process. Participants will also gather more tools for their own future exploration.

Presenters Bio:
Sheri Meland, MSW, SAC-IT
Sheri Meland is a clinician in Outpatient Services. She holds an MS degree from UW Madison in sociology (focus on social psychology) from 2002 and an MSW from 2023. Additionally, she holds a SAC-IT and enjoys working with folks struggling with substance use. She has always been interested in the intersection between psychological processes and interpersonal interactions, focusing on how perception influences behavioral choices, which in turn influence others’ perceptions, often creating a reinforcing loop that confirms perception and bias. When she is not thinking about psychological processes, she enjoys reading, doing jigsaw puzzles, walking her dogs, and hanging out with her family.
