• Understanding co-occurring mental health and substance abuse disorders and their impacts on the lives of consumers is a vital part of competent care.
• This training is presented from the lens of service provision to consumers in community mental health programs but can be translated to other models of care.
Learning Objectives:
Training participants will:
Understand how substance use can change the clinical presentation of mental health symptoms
Know how to assess consumers for co-occurring mental health and substance abuse concerns
Learn strategies for helping individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance abuse concerns on their path to recovery.
Presenter Bios:
Jeanne Louther, MS, LPC, SAC
Jeanne Louther is the Team Lead for the OARS (Opening Avenues to Reentry Success) and Keystone Targeted Case Management programs at Journey Mental Health Center. Jeanne has eight years of clinical experience in different settings, starting with Chrysalis as an IPS Employment Specialist Supervisor and then with Journey as a case manager at CTA (Community Treatment Alternatives) before moving to her present position with OARS/Keystone. Jeanne has studied MI for the last 8 years, completing the advanced certificate program and has been serving as a coach for MI at the CTA and OARS programs for the last 5 years. As a coach, Jeanne has attended several “Coaching the Coaches” seminars for MI and continues to work with staff on implementing MI into their individual practices. Jeanne is a Sagittarius, and happily co-exists with two large dogs, two cats, and two horses (the horses do not live in the house). In her former life, she owned and operated an equestrian center where she trained and taught people to ride horses. Her favorite indoor COVID activity has been learning to play the guitar.
Mary-Jo Olsen, LCSW, MSSW
Mary-Jo Olsen is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and the Director of Community Services at Journey Mental Health Center in Madison, WI. She supervises the five Assertive Community Treatment/Community Support programs and the Opening Avenues to Reentry Success, Keystone Community Services and Conditional Release programs. Prior to 2020, Mary-Jo was the Program Manager of Community Treatment Alternatives, a forensic Assertive Community Treatment Program of Journey Mental Health Center. Mary-Jo’s experience working with individuals experiencing mental health and substance abuse issues extends beyond Journey. She was a Vocational Consultant at Chrysalis Inc., an Adult Family Home Coordinator at Goodwill Industries, and a Project/Research Assistant in multiple departments at the University Wisconsin-Madison. Mary-Jo has been with Journey for 25 years.
*Journey Mental Health Center has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 6760. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credits are clearly identified. Journey Mental Health Center is solely responsible for all aspects of this program.
